BEGINNERS CERAMICS


in these 2 hour sessions, you can begin to develop your knowledge of pottery: clay preparation, clays, pinching, coiling, slabbing, use of moulds and formers, wheel throwing, model/sculpture making and lettering/decorating techniques.


students may have a particular desire to concentrate on one particular technique or project, from their first class. more able students are encouraged to develop their own particular work and style.


in later sessions you will be able to learn the process of finishing your pottery. Including glazing and different firing techniques.


during the term there may be off-site raku sessions that can also be attended.

the pottery is well equipped with five electric potter’s wheels, four electric kilns and six tables for hand building. also, a wide range of tools and ancillary items commonly associated with pottery.


tea, coffee, hot & cold water are provided at request. please note toilet facilities are accessed by two flights of stairs.


it is advised that you wear warm, comfortable and old clothing. clay washes out just like mud but you don’t want to your best threads getting dirty.


what you need to bring

  • old towel.

  • pottery tools (if you have any, not essential as these are available in the pottery).

  • apron.

  • mug (if you’d like a hot drink).

TERMS, CONDITIONS AND INFO


bookings can made by using the ’contact’ page. some payments can be made by using the ’pay for something’ page, however firing charges and any other costs are calculated and can be paid by cash or card in the pottery directly.


your space in a session can be exchanged for space in a session at a later or earlier date for no extra cost. once confirmed, sessions become non-exchangeable 48 hours before the session start time, unless for a valid reason I can offer no refund for cancellations before this time.


SAFETY IN THE POTTERY

  • long hair should always be tied back whilst in the pottery due to the danger of mechanical rotation.

  • please do not touch any items on the shelves that aren’t your own without permission, ceramics are fragile and some glaze ingredients are dangerous when mishandled.

  • you should never run in the pottery.

  • please notify immediately of any spillages.

  • the kiln area is strictly off limits to students and you should never try to take work out of the kilns.

  • protective gloves are provided when using oxides/glazes.

  • always wear a face mask when creating any kind of clay dust.

  • if you are unsure of anything please ask, better safe than sorry.


ILLNESS/COVID POLICY

please do not attend class if you have any of the following:

  • Have any of the symptoms now commonly associated with Covid, Flu or Common Cold.

  • Have tested positive for Covid-19 after a lateral flow or PCR test.

  • Have been in close contact with a person who has since tested positive.

  • Furthermore, please allow at least 48 hours after any periods of sickness before attending class.
